One of the promises of Web3 is to increase diversity and inclusion.
Within that, the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) creator space is one of the most exciting and fast-moving sectors of the art world. However, it's also one of the least diverse.
There is a vast gender gap reflecting the underrepresentation of women in the current NFT ecosystem. Digital creators are predominately men. In fact, data reveals that just 16% of NFT creators are women.
And it’s not just as creators that women have been largely excluded from the NFT market. Women account only for about 4% of total NFT sales globally since February 2020.
While data explaining this disparity is sparse, it’s easy to speculate that Web3’s excluding language is likely one of the barriers for women.
The NFT art marketplace is an ideal place for female artists to shine. But before we get into the details, let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
In the art world as a whole, women have been underrepresented since its beginnings.
The National Museum of Women in the Arts estimates that only 5% of all artists who have ever lived were female—and even fewer could make their living from their work alone.
This means that many female artists had to take on other jobs outside of their studio practice just so they could survive; others gave up on becoming full-time artists not only because they faced financial difficulty but also because society didn't see them as serious artists worth investing in or supporting financially.
But we’re trying to close that gap.
RealNifty's mission aims to fix that by levelling the NFT playing field. By bridging the gap between the physical and digital, RealNifty is informing as many people as possible about Web3 and NFTs.
As a learning platform for those not yet well-versed in the power of NFTs, RealNifty is helping women redefine the Web3 art industry. The more we can educate and embolden women to create and invest in NFTs, the more space will be created for female creators and collectors in the industry.
As a curated NFT marketplace and agency, RealNifty helps accomplished artists and creatives showcase and sell their work.
RealNifty is a platform for all, including fantastic women creators. We’ve highlighted a handful below:
Leila Pinto works in oils and mixed media, in addition to exploring new digital technologies in art. She has her own gallery in the Metaverse, was featured in the first all-female NFT exhibition in Singapore and was named one of the top 5 NFT artists to watch, follow and invest in.
Leslie A Spurlock is an impact photographer, NFT artist, NFT collector and humanitarian. With over 20 years of experience, Leslie is bold with her pictures and captures the world through her eyes. She has covered stories all over the world from the USA to the Amazon to Haiti, taking breathtaking pictures wherever she goes.
Ola Cichy is a Canadian artist whose practice includes canvas painting, drawing, augmented reality art and music. Raised on the Baltic coast of Eastern Europe, she started learning art at a very young age under the tutelage of her mother, a professional artist.
Emily Miller is RealNifty’s youngest artist at 18 years old. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, you can follow along on her journey as she continues to explore the body and the light within us all.
Women have always been involved in the art world. If you're a woman who wants to find new ways to showcase your work, there are many ways for you to make a difference in the NFT creator space:
